Malaysia

When I needed to access HIV treatment I went to the doctor and they asked for my passport details, but they didn’t ask for my visa status or stay permit. The doctor assured me that the Ministry of Health of Malaysia was not going to report me to the enforcement authorities such as Police or Immigration.

I felt a bit stigmatized by health workers and I felt interrogated by the Ministry of Health, but they made my access to treatment very easy, even if it was a bit expensive.

I heard some employers and Universities require health check ups that might include HIV testing and visas might be revoked if the results are positive for HIV, Syphilis, or Hepatitis, but it was not my case.

However, my employer made clear that Health Insurance did not cover any HIV related matters and the insurance company might revoke my insurance if they found an HIV positive status.
