The owner of a sauna centre was fined a total of RM8,000 by the magistrate’s court here today after he admitted to exposing others to the risk of HIV infection and possessing obscene material on his mobile phone.

Magistrate Roshayati Radellah imposed the sentence on X, 57, after he pleaded guilty to both charges, which were read to him in Mandarin by the court interpreter.

She also ordered Khor to serve between eight and 10 months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay the fines.

According to the first charge, X was accused of having reason to believe that he was suffering from an infectious disease — the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) — and exposing others to the risk of infection through his actions at the Unique Two Recreation Centre.

He was charged under Section 12(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342), punishable under Section 24(a) of the same Act.
