In October 2025, a district court in Uzbekistan convicted a man of putting another person at risk of HIV transmission, under Part 4 of Article 113 of the Criminal Code. The defendant, who had been diagnosed with HIV in 2019 and was formally warned about the legal consequences of exposing others, entered into a civil marriage in early 2025 and had unprotected sexual intercourse with his spouse without disclosing his status.
Medical examinations later confirmed that the partner was not infected. The court noted the defendant’s full confession, the absence of a complaint from the partner, and his responsibilities as a parent of four children as mitigating factors. Emphasizing the principles of fairness and humanity, the court imposed a sentence of restricted liberty to be served at his residence, rather than imprisonment. The defendant retains the right to appeal the verdict to a higher court.
