The Ahangaran City Criminal Court convicted a woman for knowingly placing another person at risk of HIV infection.
In a judgment issued on 2 February 2026, the court found the defendant guilty under Article 113(4) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which criminalises knowingly exposing another person to the risk of HIV infection.
According to the case file, the defendant had been registered at the regional AIDS centre since February 2021 and had previously been formally warned about criminal liability for exposing others to HIV. The case concerned a relationship that began in the summer of 2024 in Ahangaran, during which the defendant and the complainant lived together and had repeated unprotected sexual intercourse. The complainant later learned of the defendant’s HIV status after a dispute in November 2025 and reported the matter to the police. Medical testing subsequently confirmed that he had not acquired HIV.
During the proceedings, the defendant admitted the facts and expressed remorse, asking the court not to impose a custodial sentence because she is the sole caregiver for three minor children. The complainant stated that he had no claims against her.
Taking into account the circumstances of the case and a previous sentence imposed in December 2025 for an unrelated offence, the court imposed a total sentence of two years and six months’ imprisonment to be served in a general regime colony. The term of imprisonment was ordered to run from 28 January 2026.
The parties were informed that the judgment may be appealed to the Tashkent Regional Court within ten days.
