West Singhbhum police on Saturday arrested a fugitive lab technician, accused in the transfusion of HIV-positive blood to five children with thalassaemia at Sadar Hospital, Chaibasa, in Oct last year.

Police arrested the man from Ranchi about 70 days after the FIR was lodged against him at Sadar police station on Feb 7 this year. Parents of the five children had lodged the complaint after Jharkhand high court ordered registration of the FIR on Feb 4.

Sadar police station officer in-charge Tarun Kumar told the media that the accused will be thoroughly interrogated.

After the case came to light, the state government suspended West Singhbhum civil surgeon and hospital in-charge doctor and removed the lab technician from the job.

The case is currently pending hearing before the high court.
