A court in Siberia’s Kemerovo region has sentenced a 32-year-old man to three years in prison for knowingly infecting his girlfriend with HIV, local prosecutors said this week. While in prison for another crime, the man started corresponding with a 25-year-old woman, prosecutors said in an online statement. Upon his release, he went to live with her but did not tell her that he was HIV-positive.

He was registered at an HIV prevention and treatment center where he was warned that deliberately transmitting HIV is a punishable crime, the statement said. His girlfriend saw him entering the center and questioned him about it, but he denied having the disease. The woman, who has two young children, then got tested and found out that she was HIV positive.

Under the Russian Criminal Code, the man faced up to five years behind bars.
