ALBANY — An HIV-positive inmate found guilty but mentally ill after biting a jailer was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison Thursday, court officials said.

Edlendco Shandar Green was found guilty during a bench trial by Superior Court Judge Stephen Goss July 7 of reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person and rioting in a penal institution by a mentally ill person after prosecutors say he bit a jailer during a fight at the Dougherty County Jail Nov. 17, 2006.

Goss handed down a 20-year prison term Thursday for the reckless conduct charge and a five-year term for the rioting charge with that term to be served concurrently with the 20-year sentence with credit for time already served in jail, court documents show.

Green was an inmate at the Dougherty County Jail when he got into a fight with Cpl. Chris LeBlanc and bit him on the finger, according to his arrest warrant.

He was originally charged with two counts of reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person, two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and rioting in a penal institution; three of the charges were later dismissed, court records show.
